The versatile and functional ulu (pronounced 'oo-loo') has been perfected over the last five millennia by the Native peoples of Alaska and the Arctic. The curved shape of the ulu is inspired by the original material it was made from- slate, a stone whose naturally occurring flakes often have a sharp, curved edge. The ulu is an all-purpose knife; grasp the easy-grip handle and use a rocking motion to chop, dice or slice just about anything in your kitchen. Especially good for chopping herbs, and dicing onions and garlic.
The design of the ulu, with the handle above the blade (as opposed to the handle being at the end of the blade, as with most knives) centers your cutting force over the blade, which makes cutting both easier and more efficient. The ergonomic design makes it useful for those with arthritis, carpal tunnel, tendonitis, and other degenerative disorders. (In fact, Ulu Factory ulus are endorsed by the American Arthritis Foundation.) The ulu can even be used by hunters, to skin and dress game, and in fishing, to clean and fillet fish.
Use your ulu with an ulu-specific chopping bowl, or any regular cutting board. Ulus make excellent conversation pieces. Comes with directions, history, and stand. Made in Alaska with U.S. Stainless Steel and walnut handle.
